Lindisfarne Castle
Lindisfarne Castle

We are heading to the bird rich north-east of England to see wonderful birds, in wild places; why not join our small group in June 2011. A four day trip is planned, including guiding, transport, accommodation, meals, fees, use of telescope, field guide and a check list.

Farnes in distance
The Farne Islands in the distance

Spring is a wonderful time to visit the famous Farne Islands off the beautiful Northumbrian coast. These magical islands will be teaming with birds and we will enjoy up close and personal views of the breeding seabirds. The Farnes are home to tens of thousands of Puffins and we will be right amongst them! If you have never experienced being “in” a seabird colony then come along and be blown away by the noise and spectacle of birds all around you, unforgettable. Here we literally walk amongst nesting terns and Eider ducks as they play out their breeding season right in front of us. Arctic Terns dive-bomb us as we pass through their territories so make sure you where an old hat. The views of the myriad of seabirds in unrivalled anywhere and for those with a camera, any camera, the photos are unlimited. You can not fail to be amazed by this spectacular place. It is only a short boat ride from the mainland and we land on the islands so even the worst sailor, like Alan, will have no problems.

We will also visit Holy Island, or Lindisfarne, just up the coast, another spectacular wild location that can produce amazing birds. It is an adventure just getting out to the island as the road is only passable at low-tide. We will ensure our visit is perfectly timed so we cross on to the island as the tide drops allowing us plenty of time on the beautiful wild place.

Our main focus will be to search for migrants in the few trees, hedges and scattered bushes which provide a haven for tired birds. Almost anything can and does turn up here and we will search the area to see what has dropped in. This is really exciting birding; you just never know what might pop up next. Waders will be on the extensive mudflats and offshore Eider ducks and many other seabirds will be seen.

Our base for this trip will be the lovely coastal town of Bamburgh with its marvellous castle and miles of beautiful beach. Our very comfortable hotel is a very short walk from both the beach and castle. If time allows we will visit other coastal birding sites nearby, keeping a close eye on bird news from the area so we catch up with any scarce birds.

On the journey up, or down, depending on bird news and availability of scarce birds on the Northumberland coast, we call at RSPB Saltholme. This new reserve is a wonderful birding site with waders, wildfowl and more. The pools here are over-looked by an impressive visitor centre and excellent hides. We are sure to boost our trip list of birds greatly here, and enjoy the excellent café!
