Shear Madness
We took a trip south into mid-Wales with Brian, Helen and Dewi to look for Manx Shearwaters and we were not disappointed!
First though we called in at the Dyfi Osprey Project and enjoyed brilliant views of the two adults and the well-grown youngster.

Osprey looks for a fish, this one snapped in the USA!
A Red Kite soared over the Osprey nest and the female was up and after the kite, mobbing it and giving us a great show!
Siskins, Lesser Redpolls and a handsome male Reed Bunting were all showing well from the Osprey hide.

Siskin takes to the air

And here a better look at a Siskin
We then headed down to the coast north of Borth and stood open-mouthed at the sight before us! Thousands of Manx Shearwaters were flying north just beyond the breakers. It was an amazing spectacle as they streamed past on some superhighway for shearwaters! We tried to count them but the numbers were just too great, so we estimated how many were passing each second, and calculated they were passing at a rate of very roughly 18,000 per hour! None of us had seen a movement like it before, it was just staggering.
On the nearby Dyfi Estuary we watched three Ospreys fishing before heading for home, still buzzing from our Shearwater experience.
We are planning another trip to see the Manx Shearwater on Saturday 21 July, please contact us on

We look forward to enjoying amazing birds and wildlife with you!
