Sandhill Crane at Loch of Strathbeg
The Biggest Twitch catches up with the Sandhill Crane!
We were already driving up to Scotland for a few days to give a talk on The Biggest Twitch at the Grant Arms Hotel in Grantown-on-Spey, but of course we had to make a slight detour en route to visit RSPB Loch of Strathbeg, as there was news of a rather special bird in town!
The reserve is a wonderful bird-rich wetland on the east coast of Scotland.

Luckily, the mega-rare American Sandhill Crane was still on the reserve and showing off from the Tower Hide, albeit a little distant.

The Sandhill Crane seemed quite at home here, finding plenty to eat in the shallow water
We looked up to see vast skeins of Pink-footed Geese flighting in to the reserve and surrounding stubble fields, an estimated 24,000 birds!

We had a wonderful visit and also enjoyed not one but two Pectoral Sandpipers, some 70 Ruff, 2 Curlew Sandpipers, Greenshank and a host of wildfowl. Definitely a place we will return to!
