Rarity drops in on Anglesey
A farmer called in at RSPB Conwy and asked for help identifying a bird seen in a wet field on his farm. Looking at a field guide he quickly picked out Glossy Ibis! Julian Hughes chatted to the man and was convinced the chap was right about the ID. Next morning Julian was looking at a Glossy Ibis in a wet field south of Bryngwran, news not to be ignored.
We headed over and soon found the spot, a nice marshy area in a horse paddock, ideal for an ibis. But no sign of the bird, oh no! A Bassett hound in the nearby garden began howling like crazy and it did not look, or sound good, for seeing the bird. Two Moorhens popped out in to view but no ibis. We were thinking the rarity had done a bunk when suddenly the Glossy Ibis stepped in to view in a gap in the juncus! Almost as quickly it vanished again, did we see it? Then the Glossy Ibis gave itself up and showed off very well feeding in the wet grass and scope views were wonderful. The bird was ringed with a standard metal ring and a large plastic darvic ring which read R9T. This individual bird had been ringed in Spain as a juvenile earlier in the year. On 7th September the bird had been in a flock of 20 Glossy Ibis seen in Devon on the River Otter. It was next seen in Avonmouth before reaching Anglesey, where next?
