Portugal: from the mountains to the coast
We were out early to get to the top of the mountains at Foia at dawn.

The early birder casts a long shadow!

We were rewarded with great views of Ring Ouzel, Serin and confiding Rock Buntings

Our search for Blue Rock Thrush took us right to the very summit - yes, there's a Blue Rock Thrush in this shot!

OK, here's a closer view!
For a complete change of habitat we drove to the dramatic coast near Cap St Vincent.

This was a good spot for Black Redstart

Time for some scanning...

... and some photography

In fact, it was amazing the variety of equipment used by our group to search for, photograph, film and generally enjoy the birds!

We watched this Osprey on migration make its weary way inland: phew, made it!

Lucky encounter with two Chough just above the cliffs

There was just time to play the tourist for a short while as we visited the lighthouse at Cap St Vincent on the most southwesterly corner of Europe

But we were quickly back to the birding at an estuary not far from the lighthouse

Good to see some familiar faces here, but the Caspian Terns, Sandwich Terns, Spoonbills and Kentish Plovers probably raised more excitement than this Dunlin!
Plenty more photos from our great trip to Portugal to follow so do check back soon!
