Pacific Golden Plover & The Biggest Twitch
Pacific Golden Plover and The Biggest Twitch
How many times now have our scheduled birding trips coincided with a mega bird? True to form, our most recent Biggest Twitch birding trip, this time in Norfolk, coincided with the arrival of the Pacific Golden Plover at Cley NWT reserve.
Although there'd been no further sign of the plover during the day on Saturday, late afternoon saw us in the North Hide at Cley peacefully scanning the scrape when a new bird dropped in. "A plover?" checked Steve, "Oh *&@$" replied Alan, and pandemonium broke out as we all focused our scopes on the new arrival: Pacific Golden Plover!

We put the word out and it wasn't long before more birders began arriving at full pelt again to enjoy this glorious bird! Having filled our boots with views of this handsome plover, we left them to it as the hide became rather crowded!

A wide variety of bill shapes on view
It may have been star of the show, but Pacific Golden Plover wasn't the only bird we enjoyed this weekend, with well over 110 species on our final list. Spending time along the coast and inland, we enjoyed the very best sites Norfolk has to offer and at this time of year we enjoyed seeing plenty of youngsters as well as adult birds.

Iconic Avocet on an RSPB reserve of course

Not sure these Egyptian Geese would win a beauty parade ...

... but these wildflowers in a strip of set aside land certainly would do!

Happy Bittern Watchers! We enjoyed four separate sightings of this elusive bird, is that being greedy?
Our thanks go to Steve, Julie and Julie for making this such a fun weekend, we hope we can share more birding with you!
