A great day's guiding in sunny North Wales yesterday. An early start, meeting at Conwy RSPB reserve at 6am. It was very cold, a frost, so bird song was a little subdued. However, we soon found the first Reed Warbler of the year singing near the viewing screen off the boardwalk. Nearby a Common Redstart sang but refused to show. A flock of Black-tailed Godwits were in thier brick-red breeding plumage. In the Conwy valley, the woodlands held singing Pied Flycatchers and a Common Redstart that did show, sitting in the morning sun just glowing with colour! Nuthatches and Treecreeper entertained at close range.Further south and the uplands of the Denbigh Moors were alive with birds. A Cuckoo sat in a small bare tree calling repeatedly as Tree Pipits sang overhead. Crossbills, Siskins, Lesser Redpolls were all here.We enjoyed three sightings of wonderful Red Kites as we headed south to the RSPB Osprey project near Porthmadog. Our luck was in and after a short wait we witnessed a nest change-over as the male came in to give the female a break from sitting on their three eggs. A Whooper Swan was in a nearby field, an injured bird that cannot make it north, but it seemed pretty happy. Common Sandpipers fed along the river.Back north and we sought out a singing Wood Warbler which came in right above us, delivering its trembling song and giving amazing views in the afternoon sun. The same wood also held more Common Redstart and Pied Flycatchers. The day finished back at RSPB Conwy where a singing Lesser Whitethroat, Whimbrel and a shockingly bright Yellow Wagtail rounded off a great birding day.Why not join us for a day of wonderful birding?
