With a lot going on it was a case of squeezing in birding where possible. An early start saw Alan and Mike Duckham on Anglesey. A Green-winged Teal had been seen on Llyn Padrig near Aberffraw. This little watched lake lies on the far side of a field so viewing is bit distant. Plenty of Teal were out on the water but no Green-winged. Then they noticed more Teal amongst the near edge vegetation. Alan picked out the drake Green-winged Teal with this group but the bird quickly swam out of sight. After a wait the bird eventually moved out onto the open water and showed well with the telescopes. Two Pintail were also here and several Shoveler.
They then headed for nearby Llyn Coron, on the way a female Merlin dashed across the lane, a year tick. At Coron usual selection of common wildfowl and as they scanned Mikes telephone rang, Rob Sandham was now at Llyn Padrig watching a Bittern! Dashing back to the car they soon joined Rob and luckily the Bittern showed well.
That was it for Alan so Mike joined Rob for more birding.
Late afternoon found Alan at Gresford Flash, near Wrexham watching hundreds of gulls. Most were Lesser black backed Gulls; remember when they were rare in winter? Careful searching eventually paid off with an adult Yellow-legged Gull nice end to the day.
