Having spent all morning tied to the computer, we escaped into the sunshine and decided to take a look at Kinmel Bay to see if the Snow Buntings were still around. Of course when we got out in the car park by the blue bridge over the River Clwyd, the wind was blowing pretty strongly, but we wrapped up and headed out onto the stony beach. Do we try left or right first? We tried walking left, and of course the birds weren’t there, they were to the right. We spotted the tracks of a number of passerines in the sand amongst the pebbles, so we knew they must be close. And then we caught sight of them, five gorgeous little birds, ferreting amongst the flotsam and jetsam, picking out morsels to eat. The male was beginning to get into his breeding plumage, his wings noticeably blacker than the last time we’d seen him, and his body pure white in contrast. Alan lay on the stones to take some photos, but they blend in well with the stony background, and it was when one bird flew up onto a weather-beaten log that he was able to get some clear shots.Walking back to the car, very pleased to have caught up with these charismatic characters once again, we also picked up a Black Redstart swooping from its perch on the metal fence to snatch an insect on the ground.Reluctantly we dragged ourselves away to return to the slave of the computer again!
