Birds, Boots & Butties on the Lleyn
With Alan away working, Ruth roped in her sister Susan to accompany her on a recce trip down the Lleyn Peninsula. Their goal was to test-drive a new walk Ruth’s next book. She’s writing a new addition on the Lleyn for her series of walking books called Birds, Boots and Butties on where to enjoy a good walk, with great views of birds, and a decent café as the reward at the end. It can be harder than you might think to find all three, but the girls struck lucky with a walk around Carn Fadryn right in the centre of the Lleyn. The views across the land were breathtaking, stretching across to Anglesey in one direction and Harlech in the other, well worth the steep puff up to the top.
Chiffchaffs and Willow Warblers tried to out-sing one another from trees on the lower levels, a Green Woodpecker called teasingly from the fields out of sight but then flew past within a few feet of them when they’d given up all hope of a glimpse, a Common Snipe flushed from a boggy patch they tried to negotiate, while two Ravens and a Buzzard played out a dogfight overhead, tumbling down in the sky as chaser became chased and back again.
And the reward for all this exercise was a welcome cuppa and cake in the nearby Mill House tearoom and restaurant, to round off a perfect day out in the sunshine.
