Birding the North Wales coast
A full day guiding along the North Wales is always fun and yesterday was no exception. Dawn at Rhos Point west of Colwyn Bay was grey and cold but plenty of birds were here. As the tide pushed in the waders were driven nearer and nearer the prom and the views of Oystercatchers, Redshanks and Turnstones were great. After a short search we found the target bird here, Purple Sandpipers roosting on boulders only a few meters away. As we soaked up views of these confiding birds two Peregrine Falcons swept low over head and powered off towards the Little Orme. Moving further west we were soon watching six Twite at Penrhyn Bay.Conwy RSPB Reserve next where a small flock of Black tailed Godwits and scope filling views of Common Snipe were enjoyed. At Aber Ogwen we timed our arrivial perfectly as a pair of Peregrines flew across the estuary. One bird began to fly fast with real purpose and I thought it was begining a hunt and advised keeping the bird in view! The falcon flew fast and strong to the west and looked like it was off and away, I kept watching and the raptor turned and gained height. Then we saw what the Peregrine had seen, a pigeon high above. The predator closed the gap the climbed above the intended prey before dropping like a stone! The pigeon took evasive action and the falcon just missed! But the Peregrine was not giving up and a "dog-fight" took place high above us, both birds twisting, turning, diving and rolling across the sky, it was just awesome! The birds came lower and just as the falcon closed in again they were lost to view behind trees so we never saw the out come. However a few minutes later a Peregrine flew and landed in a tree by the River Ogwen, no sign of any prey. On the pool behind the beach we enjoyed amazing views of waders. Six Greenshank were roosting right opposite the hide and with them a lovely Spotted Redshank, two Common Redshank and a Common Snipe all lined up for us. Onto Anglesey and we headed over to Beddmanarch Bay where we were treated to the spectacle of 210 Pale bellied Brent Geese incredible close, calling softly as they rode the tide. Out in the bay a Great Northern Diver and 2 Slavonian Grebes bobbed and dived with Red-breasted Mergansers and Goldeneye. As the tide dropped hundreds of Dunlin flew in to feed and were joined by Grey Plovers and Ringed Plovers. From here we headed down towards Malltraeth, stopping on the way to admire a huge flock of swirling Golden Plover and Lapwing. At the Cefni Estuary plenty of waders including our first Bar-tailed Godwit of the day. On the Cob Pool over 100 Pintail loafed on the calm waters such beautiful ducks. In Newborough Forest we had a great, if breif veiw of a Woodcock and watched Lesser Redpolls and Siskins in the pines above. All in all a great day!
