We headed out into the sunshine for some Anglesey birding. First stop was Beddmanarch Bay, where the tide was well out. That meant plenty of exposed mudflat and plenty of waders to scan through. With the sunlight on our backs, good light and for once, no wind, it was a real pleasure to be out birding. No rarities, but plenty of good wader action with hundreds of Dunlin, 60+ Knot, 18 Grey Plover, as well as Ringed Plover, Oystercatcher, Curlew and Redshank. Further out, two Great Northern Divers were showing well, one of which retaining much of its breeding plumage, surprising in mid-December, while two Slavonian Grebes dived in the bay along with a scattering of Great Crested Grebes and Red-breasted Mergansers. In the narrow tidal channel, a gang of Goldeneye dived repeatedly and popped up to the surface like piebald corks. Small numbers of pale-bellied Brent Geese wandered rather aimlessly on the far bank.We went onto South Stack where we walked along the coastal path. A pair of Chough were extremely flighty but as always looked fantastic as the sunshine caught their irridescent plumage. Ravens kronked above and below us as they patrolled the cliffs and a pod of harbour porpoise frolicked just offshore, breaking the calm waters with their dark backs. Making our way up the slope above Ellin's Tower, a small grey bird flitted up onto a boulder, shivering its rufous tail: Black Redstart! A great bird to find. As we headed back down the lane to the car park, we enjoyed views of at least 5 Stonechats.A quck stop at Holyhead harbour by the fish quay produced good views of a winter-plumaged Black Guillemot, diving in the harbour mouth.Santa paid an early visit to The Biggest Twitch household as we've upgraded our camera to something that we hope will allow us to capture better birding shots, a Christmas present to each other. It's early days, today was our first outing, but the attached pic shows that even common birds can make for a quality image. Many thanks to Mark at Cambrian Photography in Colwyn Bay for his great advice.
