Birdfair Round Up: Saturday and Sunday

Saturday and Sunday merged into a blur of book signings, chatting to friends and visitors to the stand. It was good to catch up with Nick Baker on the Leica stand, where we did a book signing, and Alan and Nick did a prize draw on Sunday to win a day’s birdwatching in North Wales in October with Alan.

Alan, Ruth and Nick Baker, plus a few books!

We did a few book swaps with other authors, swapping our book for The Jewel Hunter by Chris Goodie, the story of his adventure seeing all the world’s pittas in a year, also the Colombian field guide and with Stuart Winter for his copy of Tales of a Tabloid Twitcher, a nice bit of bartering! It was good to catch up with Lee and Rachel from REGUA in Brazil, who are on the point of doing a sponsored run to raise funds to support REGUA (see their link http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/RunRainforestRun if you’d like to support their fundraising). We also met up with our great friend Peter Lobo, who wonderfully gave up a whole month of his time back in 2008 to show us the most amazing birds in North East India as part of The Biggest Twitch. We’ve been invited to speak at the Global Bird Watchers Conference in Gujarat later this year, and are hoping to go birding and mammal-watching with Peter after this – should be a blast!

From talking endemics with the guys from A Baur and Co in Sri Lanka, to safaris in Botswana with Letaka Safaris, and chewing the fat with Killian Mullarney and Bryan Bland from Sunbird while Killian tidied up their stand with the vacuum cleaner, we talked and laughed ourselves hoarse over the two last days of the fair.

We were exhausted and all talked out by the time we packed up the stand on Sunday evening, and started the 4 hour drive back home, with Iain Campbell fast asleep on the back seat. No peace for the wicked the next morning, as we returned Iain to Manchester airport bright and early in time for his flight back to Ecuador. And then we slumped, totally drained, on our sofa for a well-earned cup of tea or 3. Exchanging tweets and emails with our fellow Birdfair exhibitors, we all agreed the same thing: it was our best and busiest Birdfair ever, and we all shared the same hangover from this 3-day long birding party fest!
