Biggest Twitch Book Review in Australia
Review of The Biggest Twitch by Alan McBride on http//Bird-o.com
It’s always nerve-wracking to read an independent review of your book, especially when so much heart and soul has gone into writing it. But we’re thrilled with the review that has recently appeared on
http://Bird-o.com by Alan McBride.
Alan McBride
Bird-O is a new website in Australia which Alan is involved in setting up. It has links to all sorts of wildlife sites and reports, etc and according to Alan, Bird-o will hopefully be springing up all over the world soon. We look forward to it.
This is what he wrote:
If you are looking for a terrific read for the long summer nights ahead then go no further than “The Biggest Twitch” by Alan Davies and Ruth Miller.
With the chapters written in alternating order by each of the authors and some meticulous detail this book is good enough to be used as a serious trip report in any of the countries they visited.
A few gripping photos such as Resplendent Quetzal, Harpy Eagle and Hyacinth Macaw mask the intricacies of a well thought out, year long excursion taken with a single goal in mind: that of breaking the record for number of species seen (twitched being the correct usage for a change) in a given calendar year (2008).
Users making it to the Australia section after page 242 may even be surprised to find it has useful information to help regulars here find birds or even cool places to stay such as the Mount Ebenezer Roadhouse.
Imagine, if you can find information about Australia, what you can find in the rest of the book. Apart from a very entertaining read, its just a great escape for many who aren’t able to get out as much as they’d like to.
The previous world record of 3,662 set by Jim Clements of “the list” fame had stood for 19 years before Alan and Ruth gave up their jobs, put most things into the pawnbrokers to finance this wildly exciting jaunt and found themselves in the Arizona desert at 04.00 on January 1st 2008. Why they wasted the first four hours of the new year isn’t clear to me unless I missed it!
Suffice to say, this should be enough to get you to check out your favourite bookstore today.

Another very positive review, this time from the other side of the globe what more could we ask for? Hope those books in Australia just fly off the shelves!
