We left Llandudno at 4.30am and headed for Gwent in south Wales where a Marmora's Warbler was being seen. This is the first ever Marmora's Warbler for Wales and only the fifth ever for the UK, so a must-see bird. The weather was not good with very heavy rain and low cloud. It was not looking good. We arrived at the hillside north of Blaenavon, known as the Blorenge, which rhymes with orange, to find low cloud and very poor visibility. Walking down the hill we found a small group of birders all looking the same way, this looked hopeful. The Marmora's had just shown briefly but was now out of sight. We cursed that stop for breakfast! The mist lifted and the morning brightened, more birds were moving about, Whinchats and Tree Pipits were all over the place. Then a song was heard and we all scanned frantically but no sign of the songster. Then Ruth saw a small bird perched in a distant hawthorn and the scope quickly confirmed - Marmora's Warbler! The bird was distant but scope views were good and we stepped back so others could see the bird in our scope. The Marmora's then flew, luckily towards us, and over the next hour or so we enjoyed wonderful views of the mega bird.
