Last Friday, you may remember, we drove down to Cardiff for a meeting and with the weekend streching ahead of us had considered continuing south down to Cornwall to look for the long staying Snowy Owl near St. Ives, a vagrant from the high Arctic. But during the week there had been two negative reports from the site, no sign of the owl, so of course we did not make the long drive. You can imagine we were a little frustrated to find out that the bird had in fact still been present on Saturday, the very day we would have looked for it! It seems the news was not broadcast as some photograghers had been getting too close to the bird and disturbing it regularly, how sad. With modern photograghic equipment surely there is no need for this behaviour? Now today comes news of another Arctic visitor that we would have loved to see! Last Sunday, as we were sitting at home not doing anything that could not have waited a Gyr Falcon was in Pembrokeshire! This most wanted vagrant was seen in a garden at Hakin, overlooking Milford Haven. The awesome raptor was feasting on a feral pigeon and was photograghed by the householders. They had no idea who their garden visitor was but knew it was something they had never seen before and luckily had their camera handy. The photograghs finally reached Pembrokeshire birder Dave Astins who contact us with the amazing if very frustrating news! Fingers and everything else crossed that the bird is relocated.
