Alan made a quick visit to RSPB Conwy after dropping Ruth off at work. With limited time he hurried down to the new screen along the boardwalk, pausing briefly to look at a very showy Reed Warbler belting out its song. On the lagoon Lapwings were feeding up close and personal just meters from the screen, lovely. A gang of twelve Dunlin fed hurriedly almost up to their neat black bellies in the water. On the far side of the lagoon and area of reed stubble and shallow water looked ideal for a good bird to lurk. Scanning the area a white flash caught the eye, it showed again but still only a glimpse. Could it be? Through the telescope the white flash took shape. A broad white eye-stripe belonging to a gorgeous drake Garganey! This teal sized duck is a very scarce visitor to North Wales. A quick phone call to the visitor centre had four of the RSPB staff hurrying down the boardwalk. Luckily by the time they arrived the Garganey had moved to the edge of the reeds and was showing off beautifully and all enjoyed this cracking visitor. Luckily the bird stayed all day, so a good number of people enjoyed it. Would you like to come birding with The Biggest Twitch? Well now you can!
