A Mediterranean Study
Getting up close and personal with gulls!
One advantage of living by the coast is that we have plenty of close encounters with gulls, and our seaside promenades can be great places to get close looks at these birds. Gulls are now so used to being fed by visitors to the area that you don't have to be out of your car long before a flock of gulls comes along to investigate. Have you got something good to eat?

Our group of birdwatchers is quickly spotted by a group of hungry gulls
Black-headed Gulls and Herring Gulls are usually the first to arrive, but if you're lucky something altogether more exotic may drop in too: a Mediterranean Gull. These gulls are so accustomed to people that they're pretty fearless, giving you a great opportunity for a closer look and a chance to compare size and plumages side-by-side.

Herring Gull vs Mediterranean Gull: some gulls are just simply more stylish than others!

Mediterranean Gull taking a bathe
It wasn't long before we noticed a Mediterranean Gull taking a bathe in a small pool on the beach - that heavy, drooping blood-red bill and the lack of black in the primary feathers being the giveaway that we had an adult Med Gull on the scene - and it wasn't long before the Med Gull spotted us and decided to come in for a closer look.

We have lift-off!
This beautiful adult Med Gull swooped low overhead and circled around us, giving us the chance to admire its pristine white plumage from above and below. Not everybody is a gull fan, but no-one could deny that an adult Mediterranean Gull is a stunningly attractive bird.

Pristine white plumage offset against a blue sky: simply beautiful!
Mediterranean Gull: just one of the many wonderful birds that we're lucky enough to enjoy in North Wales. If you'd like to join us on one of our relaxed-paced escorted tours enjoying the very best guided birdwatching in the area, there's still space on our
