Southern Ecuador - Copalinga Lodge
22 DecemberUp again at a ridiculously early hour to catch a flight to Loja in Southern Ecuador. Near the airport we found the local and uninspiring Drab Seedeater among a few other Tumbesian specialties like Loja Hummer and Peruvian Pygmy-Owl. The drive to Copalinga (www.copalinga.com) took a lot longer than normal thanks to the dusty road construction. A warm welcome awaited us from Katherine at the Lodge and we were soon seeing birds from the veranda: Ecuadorian Tyrannulet and Lined Antshrike were new for the year. Having dumped our gear we headed off towards the nearby National Park and birded the entrance track. New birds came thick and fast including Olive-chested Flycatcher, Gray-chinned Hermit, White-necked Parakeets, Olive Finch and Black-streaked Puffbird. Returning to the lodge we enjoyed a wonderful meal and collapsed in our beautifully appointed chalets to the sound of a Band-bellied Owl calling in the forest above.Bird species total: 4244
