Sani Pass, Drakensberg Mountains
High altitude birds and stunning views. After yesterday excitements it was nice to back to all out birding, and headed up Sani Pass, at around 10,000 feet. We first had to become illegal immigrants for the day as our passports were with a visa agency and we needed to leave South Africa for Losoto. Luckily the border guards and us came to an agreement shall we say that let us bird up the Sani Pass and them happy! So past the border we were free to enjoy great birds such as Orange breasted Rockjumper, Gurneys Sugarbird, Ground Woodpecker and many more all in wonderful scenery in glorious weather, and not a fire in sight.
The afternoon was spent birding a forest area where again we dropped lucky and every species we wanted showed off on cue. Cape Parrots were the stars with 61 birds seen, that’s quite a chunk of the world population of this endangered bird.Bird species list 3085
