Red breasted Flycatcher steals the show
Three more new birds as we bird hard to the Baltic Coast. The day began in style with us watching a singing Blyth's reed Warbler right outside the hotel. Better was quickly on offer when a Grey Partridge was seen in the adjacent ploughed field. A new bird for the year and a potential silly one to miss as we had no specific site and after Estonia unlikely to encounter one again, the great thing about this year is all birds are equal, one more towards the record. Our first stop of the day were some fish ponds where we added a White tailed Eagle to the year list on a very cold morning! The weather warmed up and we drove west. A forest area looked good habitat and we had not even stopped the car when Pekka heard a Red breasted Flycatcher singing! We baled out and plunged into the forest after the song. The song stopped and so did we, silence. We walked back only to hear the song again. The bird played hide and seek for 20 minutes or so, before it eventually gave up and showed wonderfully, a real looker, and we all agreed bird of the day! Raptors here included six Lesser Spotted Eagles! On again and we stopped to bird a huge flat bog, viewed from a tower. Here we saw Black Grouse, Honey Buzzard, and Black tailed Godwit. Early evening we arrived at the Baltic coast and scanned the shallow bay that lay in front of us. Loads of birds here best of all were a pair of Common Cranes with two small young feeding on a sand bar.Bird species total 2254
