Out at 5am in search of Capercaille but alas no luck despite giving it a good go. The forests were strangely birdless and the highlight was a female Elk with two young calfs. We headed north for Ivalo birding on route. At a large bog with shallow lake we added redhead Smew and two Rough-legged Buzzards to our year list and enjoyed the antics of displaying Ruff. The next lake held many birds but none new, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Red-necked Phalarope, Temminck's Stint and more Smew. We looked for Siberian Jay and Siberian Tit but both managed to remain hidden in the endless pines. Our last stop was a hill top with tundra like vegetation and here we quickly found our target, Dotterel. We watched three birds at close range and were amazed at how confiding they were, walking almost right up to the cars. Happy with this new bird we headed for our overnight stop at Ivalo.Bird species total 2263. Posted Ivalo Finland 06 June
