Bourke's Parrot was the highlight this morning. After staying the night at Mount Ebenezer, we birded some mulga nearby at dawn. Iain led us on a cat-and-mouse chase as we hunted down a pair of Chiming Wedgebills which finally showed well. Two Mulga Parrots flew in to a dead tree and looked great in the early morning sun. As we watched this pair, another smaller parrot flew in to join them: Bourke's Parrot, an unexpected bonus for the morning. Down on the ground, two pairs of Fairy-Wrens chased each other amongst the bushes, and at one point we were able to watch males of both Splendid and Variegated Fairy-Wrens having a stand-off just feet from us. As we made our way back to the car through the scrub, we also enjoyed views of Jacky Winter and Red-capped Robin. We then headed off towards Ayers Rock, although not without an emergency stop (especially for the 2nd car in the convoy!) to see a pair of White-back Swallows hawking over the desert. Writing this in the 40 degree heat at midday, we're waiting for lower temperatures before going back out to see THAT ROCK, and several birding sites around its base.Bird species total: 3444, 219 to go!Posted 17th October, Ayers Rock, Australia
