Squeezing out some last new birds. There was just time this morning to check out a few of Brad’s local patches around the town of Alta Floresta to pick up any species we may have missed here. We visited some areas of long grassland, swampy palm groves and undeveloped secondary growth, and enjoyed seeing birds we’d not seen for a while in the dense Amazon forest such as Black-capped Donacobius, Burrowing Owl, Grassland Sparrow and a noisy gang of Guira Cuckoos, as well as great views of a pair of Red-billed Toucans displaying in a treetop. We finally got tickable views of Black-throated Mango, a bird we’d seen several times only fleetingly before and also added Russet-crowned Crake. The rest of the day was spent travelling to Cuiaba, where we’re overnighting before heading down to Argentina tomorrow.
