The rooms may be comfortable at O’Reilly’s but that doesn’t mean we get to spend much time in them as we were out at first light again this morning to walk the Border Trail once more. A Russet-tailed Thrush skulked in the undergrowth beside the path, while looking overhead, we were privileged to enjoy excellent views of a male Paradise Riflebird, a stunning looking bird in contrast to its rough call. In the afternoon, we got a call from the Fieldguides group which is also staying here – Koala just down the road! We jumped in the van and dashed off to the site, hoping it would still be there. Panic as road regarding work held us up en route, but relief, there it was, dopily looking down at us as it balanced in a fork in a eucalyptus tree. 190 photographs later, we turned back to birding and immediately found a pair of Red-browed Treecreepers just up the road. Walking back along the dirt track, the recent disturbance to the road surface provided good feeding for several new species including Olive-tailed Thrush, which amazingly stood stock still by the side of the road, allowing us all to get great scope views.
Bird species total: 3614, only 49 to go
