Early birding around Kasanka with Frank again where we picked up a few more Miombo specialities and had amazing daylight views of a stunning Pennant-winged Nightjar roosting in a tree. Then a very long and bumpy ride out to Shoebill Lodge along a single rough track, highlight of the journey being an unexpected Blue Quail flushed from the road as we drove through a small marshy patch. Then finally out of the woodland onto the floodplain, mostly dry at this time of year, towards Shoebill Lodge. Passed huge herds of Black Lechwe antelope, impressive numbers and attractive animals, sadly probably poached quite heavily. Good views of Caspian Plover as we drove across the very dusty plain to our basic tented camp on the edge of a marshland so the air vibrated with mosquitoes!
