1st October
Pre-dawn and we were out listening in the bitter cold for the distinctive sound of Cape Clapper Larks. These larks make a bizarre clattering noise with their wings as they rise up in display flight, followed by a buzz-bomb whistle as they float back down to earth. The rest of the day was spent birding the Karoo desert, a spectacle of wildflowers after the recent rains, before reaching Brandvlei at nightfall. Highlights today included Rufous-eared Warbler, Black-headed Canary, Kopje Warbler, Cape Sugarbird, Karoo Lark and Eremomola and Black-eared Sparrow-lark.
