Inspirational listing
Would you want to drive over 40,000 miles around the UK in a Peugeot 106 to see over 300 species in less than a year, especially if your starting point is hidden deep in the countryside of far flung west Wales? Imagine you are an hour’s drive away from a decent main road and then at least another hour to reach a motorway. That shows real commitment to year-listing. And that’s exactly what two North Wales birders have done. Eddie and Sal have already seen over 300 species in the UK this year, and they kindly invited us to join their celebration party yesterday. It was a great opportunity to catch up with lots of fellow birders and to hear Ed and Sal’s tales of the trials and tribulations they experienced in the pursuit of their birding goal. Ed’s personal highlight was the gorgeous Squacco Heron they saw on the Ouse Washes, while Sal preferred the ‘flock’ of four Penduline Tits in Suffolk on the same day that they saw their 300th bird, a Hume’s Yellow-browed Warbler back in North Wales! A fantastic achievement, especially considering where they live.
