3 November. Dawn had us up in the Blue Mountains looking for more honeyeaters. Luckily the pre-dawn rain had stopped and we soon found a fine looking Yellow-tufted Honeyeater feeding in flowers over the road. Next up was Black-chinned Honeyeater, though the black on the chin takes some seeing! Three Fuscous Honeyeaters were found a little further down where a pair of Restless Flycatchers lived up to their name flitting all over the place. Breakfast overlooking a small pool provided views of both Diamond and Plum-headed Finches – great looking birds. We checked more flowering gum trees and found Little and Musk Lorikeets. Information from our friend Sam Woods, at Tropical Birding, who was in the area a few weeks ago lead us to a small stream valley with tall trees. We had only been there a few minutes when the target bird flew in, Regent Honeyeater! Wow what a stunner! This was a real target bird for us having read Sean Dooley’s book about a big year in Australia and how he really struggled for this bird before finally tracking it down. If you have not read The Big Twitch we highly recommended it, but be warned it was one of the things that inspired us, and look where that ended up!
We then headed for Sydney Airport and an evening flight down to Hobart, Tasmania.Bird species total 3690
