Birding the rainforest of Mount Lewis
Chowchilla and Noisy Pitta head up the list of fantastic birds we had here, well worth the 4.30am departure! Creeping through the undergrowth as quietly as possible, quite a challenge with a group of 7 birders, our stealth was rewarded with really good views of a pair of Chowchilla, Tooth-billed Catbird at its bower (this should really be called a bower bird) and glimpses of several Noisy Pitta. Other highlights here included White-throated Treecreeper, Eastern Whipbird, both Yellow-throated and Atherton Scrub Wrens and the diminutive Fernwren lurking in the shadows. The rest of the day was spent birding a variety of sites around Mareeba, adding Brolga (crane), Squatter Pigeon and Pale-headed Rosella to our list.
Bird species total: 3576, 87 to go!
