Another 4.30am departure and we wound our way up the mountain road through the village of Lava, collecting stunning views of Grey Nightjar at point blank range on the way, to reach an area of pine and bamboo forest. Birding was slow at first but we persisted in the low cloud and began to pick up some new birds. First of these was a pair of Bay Woodpeckers, noisily feeding above the trail. Next up was a male Blue-fronted Redstart, orange below and blue above. Finally we found a feeding flock and went in seconds from next to nothing to look at, to being almost overwhelmed by fast-moving gangs of Fulvettas, Yuhinas and Parrotbills. We struggled to ID as many birds as possible before we lost contact with the flock. We did manage to pick out Black-throated Parrotbill, Stripe-throated and Rufous-vented Yuhinas, Golden-breasted Fulvetta and both Ashy-throated and Broadbilled Warblers. We were left breathless as the flock melted away into the dense forest! Another period of quiet, then a song broke the stillness, giving away the presence of a Rufous-throated Wrenbabbler. A pair of these minute tail-less mouse-like birds was creeping amongst the vegetation overhanging the trail, and with a bit of patience we secured wonderful views.
At the end of the day we returned to Peter’s house at Kalimpong to enjoy more of his family’s wonderful hospitality. Tomorrow we move on again heading further east to Assam, and then on to the famous Kasiranga National Park.
