Birding around Jungle Lore
18th November. Dawn saw us back on the hunt for pheasants, first creeping as quietly as possible along forest tracks in the hope of Koklass Pheasant but no luck. So we were back to the hillside for Cheer Pheasant, a spectacular spot with a dirt track clinging to the near vertical hillside of rough grassland with scattered trees. We scanned the hillside both above and below but no joy. We took our picnic breakfast still scanning but still on Cheer! We decided on a change of scene and continued along the track into a wooded area, we had not gone far when a Koklass Pheasant called, close. Peter soon had the bird and we scrambled for a view, no panic this large male was really showing off stood on a boulder a wonderful sight. Back to the Cheer hunt but we again drew a blank, do these things actually exist?
The rest of the day was spent birding mountain tracks in the area and picking up more great birds, highlights included Brown Accentor, Spotted Forktail, Asian Barred Owlet and Chestnut-crowned Laughing Thrush.
