3rd October
A long driving day, with new birds quite hard to find. Agulhas Lark and Karoo Long-billed Lark were found along the way. We eventually reached the De Hoop reserve on the coast and birded an area of open scrub and lagoons where we eventually tracked down Southern Tchagra and Knysna Woodpecker, while seemingly hundreds of ticks enjoyed our Welsh blood! Then on to Stony Point at Betties Bay where we enjoyed extremely close up and personal views of Jackass (African) Penguins. A short seawatch from the point produced Shy Albatross, Black-browed Albatross and Southern Giant Petrel as well as Southern Right Whales just offshore. On the way back to Cape Town we stopped to bird the steep hillside above False Bay, and finally added Orange-breasted Sunbird and Cape Siskin to our list.
Bird species total: 3280
