More superb birds on the Manu Road! Reluctantly we left our comfy bed at Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge and headed back along the Manu Road towards Cusco. We couldn’t leave without another visit to the lek and once again were absorbed watching the antics of these incredible birds, while overhead a mother-and-baby Woolly Monkey combination swung through the canopy. If you ever get the chance to visit this wonderful lodge, we highly recommend it!
The very long journey back to Cusco was full of birds and we added another 12 new species to our list. We encountered many feeding flocks which made progress along the road slow, but colourful. Rufous-breasted Wood-quail, Crested Quetzal, Chestnut-tipped Toucanet, Chestnut-bellied Mountain-Tanager and Golden-collared Tanager, Handsome Flycatcher all appeared, to name but a few.
The recent rains had made this tricky road even more treacherous. This was brought home to us by the sight of a VW Beetle lying at the bottom of a ravine where it had slid off the road the previous night. Thankfully the occupants had been rescued by the time we reached the scene and it was lucky that some solid trees broke the car’s fall before it plunged even further down into the ravine. We were glad we had such a great driver!
