Amazonia birding 1st August
Rufous-crested Coquette steals the show! We spent the whole day birding the trails around Amazonia Lodge but we didn’t have to walk far to see our bird of the day. Right outside our room were some flowering bushes which attracted a selection of hummingbirds. While watching Golden-tailed Sapphire, White-necked Jacobin, Gould’s Jewelfront and Gray-breasted Sabrewing, a tiny hummer appeared and what a bird it was! A shock of red tipped with black on its head, an emerald throat and a white rump announced the appearance of Rufous-crested Coquette, a petite but gorgeous hummer. The Coquette, like most hummingbirds, darted from flower to flower, barely staying still for a moment, making photography very frustrating but hopefully you’ll get the idea from the picture of what an amazing bird this is.
