Norfolk Mid Summer Birdwatching
Norfolk Mid Summer Birdwatching
This Friday we are heading east to Norfolk for some top mid summer birdwatching. July is a great time to catch up with the special breeding birds many of which will have young. It is also a great time to catch up with early migrants. Waders are on the move, birds heading south from their breeding grounds, Pectoral Sandpiper, Wood Sandpipers and Little Stint all recorded on the Norfolk coast this week! We hope to find some great waders and build on our excellent track record for producing top birds, White-rumped Sandpiper and Baird's Sandpiper both found by our groups on recent visits!
Good chance of a Wood Sandpiper at Cley NWT Reserve.
Flocks of Spoonbills are being seen along the coast with an amazing count of 30 at Cley NWT Reserve and others seen at Holme, Titchwell and Stiffkey. These marshes will be full of juvenile birds with Marsh Harriers feeding young, perhaps we will be lucky enough to see a mid-air food pass. The reedbeds will be "pinging" with family parties of Bearded Tits and we should enjoy great views. Avocets will be sweeping their up-turned bills through the shallow waters of the lagoons and a good chance of a handsome breeding plumaged Spotted Redshank alongside them.
Avocets are always a delight and we will see lots on this tour.
Away from the coast we will look for some very special birds indeed. In the Brecklands we hope to see Stone Curlews and if we are lucky, as we were last July, some young birds with their goggled eyed parents. Wood Larks, Turtle Doves and Dartford Warblers will all be on our wanted list. In the vast farmland we look for Corn Buntings, Yellowhammers and Grey Partridges.
Stone Curlew are weird and wonderful birds a thrill to see.
In the evenings, the birding doesn't stop, we will look for Nightjars and hope to enjoy Grasshopper Warblers and Woodcock. Norfolk is famous for its Barn Owls and we certainly hope to enjoy a number of these most popular birds. Being out on the heathland on a warm summer evening listening to the churring of Nightjars is a magical experience.
We can't wait for more Norfolk birdwatching and know we will see a lot of birds and have a lot of fun!
We have space, for two people, on our Norfolk House Party in September - come and join us for fantastic bird migration. We stay in a lovely large house over-looking the marshes with superb birds right outside the window. During the week we visit all the top sites and enjoy lots and lots of birds. We alos enjoy great food and great company.
