Prior to 1979 birding had been limited to mostly local stuff with occasional trips mostly with the family and a spell as assistant warden on Blakeney Point on the North Norfolk coast the previous year. This spell on the Norfolk coast had been a real eye-opener on to the world of birding and the UK twitching scene. It was in 1979 that I teamed up with another North Wales birder Trevor Jones from just along the coast at Llanfairfechan. Trevor had a car, a Triumph Herald, and this opened up all sorts of birding opportunities!
